What a wonderful evening we all had last Tuesday! Parents, children, siblings and staff all enjoyed making, mingling and of course, eating! It was a busy evening with over 130 pizzas being cooked in our beautiful, mosaiced pizza oven. The pizzas were varied and delicious! The Kindergarten team would like to say a big thank you to the parents, students and staff who helped set up, prepare dough, wash up, clean up and pack up - with a special mention to Mr Tim McDonald who tended to the oven throughout the day and cooked right until the very end. What a wonderful community we have :)
Last week, the children designed a hat as part of our Personal Development unit on Sun Safety. Today, it was time to take these designs and get creative! The children were given two criteria: the hat had to stay on their heads and it had to have a brim. A range of amazing hats emerged that reflected their ingenuity and creativity along with their great problem solving skills. We even managed to squeeze in a quick fashion parade at the end. This week in Personal Development we have been learning about crossing the road safely. We brainstormed what we knew about staying safe when we cross the road and then we went outside to practise.
Straight lines, angles, big shapes, small shapes, shapes inside shapes, designs, finger and hand exercise, problem solving, brain working, fun!
The Kindergarten students have been looking at effective ways to organise data. They sorted their shoes into different categories and placed them in piles. The students soon realised that it was difficult to find out which types we had the most and least of when the shoes were in a pile. They suggested that we place the shoes in each pile in a line, which would be easier to count. It was then that we introduced the concept of a graph, and we placed the shoes on it. It was very easy to see that we had most of black shoes with two velcro straps this way! We then moved on to graphing the boys and girls in our classes, the letters in our names, toy vehicles, people counters and shapes. The children loved how we can short cut with a graph and look across at the number of items instead of counting them!
