The Kindergarten students have been looking at effective ways to organise data. They sorted their shoes into different categories and placed them in piles. The students soon realised that it was difficult to find out which types we had the most and least of when the shoes were in a pile. They suggested that we place the shoes in each pile in a line, which would be easier to count. It was then that we introduced the concept of a graph, and we placed the shoes on it. It was very easy to see that we had most of black shoes with two velcro straps this way! We then moved on to graphing the boys and girls in our classes, the letters in our names, toy vehicles, people counters and shapes. The children loved how we can short cut with a graph and look across at the number of items instead of counting them!
