Following on from our visit from Dr Rose, we defined what bullying is and the difference between bullying and conflict. We have looked into what an Upstander is, and what an Upstander can do, not only in bullying situations. After brainstorming, we watched a video outlining what Upstanding looks like and discussed various scenarios and what we could do in each one. We encourage you to read the letter sent home in regards to this and to use similar language at home to ensure consistency. This shared use of terminology will help to empower your children in their interaction with others. For our STEM challenge this week, we revisited the NED video on being an Upstander. You can view it here: UPstander Video. Afterwards, we looked at various objects (a bottle, a cup, a timer, an easel and some playing cards) and thought about how were standing. How do these objects stand up? The children had time to think, discuss and share their thinking with a partner and with the whole group, one object at a time. Their observation, thinking, and hypotheses was just fantastic! They were then presented with the challenge of making their cardboard Upstanders (characters from the video) stand up. You can some ideas of how the challenge was solved below. |
